Life according to my phone

This old phone of mine- he comes with me everywhere. I take more pictures with my phone than with my good camera lately, because, really, it is more portable, quicker, and easier.
The photos are not better, but there you have it.

This month has been full of events and moments, and this phone has captured most of them. Let the photo dump begin!

A walk in our neighborhood. We saw a "Green-headed fire dy-hydrator"
 And a "red headed one"
And our neighbor's statue of a 'wilderbeast'

Dinner out with my favorites

A boy got the horrible cold of the year,
and his coughing earned him a quick trip to see dad and get a breathing treatment in the ED.

Another boy lost a front tooth (don't worry, the second front tooth is on its way)

Claude Monet taught us a thing or two at the 'waxless wax museum'

I decided to try a new hair color

Socks was in a musical

Grapes was recognized with the citizenship award for her class!

Pencil graduated pre-school

He got the curiosity award.

The biggest two and I went to the high school production of "Cinderella" on a date

The weather has been distinctly summery, and I told that Doctor of mine, "I love the onset of summer!! Well, except for the snow." It's only snowed twice this month, and never stayed for too long, so there's that, anyway.
Life is good! Happy May to you!

The business of being the Mom

I've been thinking about motherhood for a while now. (like 11 years, what?!)
I mean, this is my life's work.

My Magnum Opus, if you will.

And I still feel like I haven't really gotten started. I have all these visions....imaginations of what a mom could be. Should be, maybe. And I have highly polished intentions of becoming That Mom.

Life As We Know It

I posted about our Christmas. (Pictures are worth a thousand words, right?)
But the rest of December- the regular life and family craziness- effortlessly glided into January.
I want to remember it, so I'm sharing with you.

We'll begin with Pencil.
Because with this monkey there are always a zillion tell-able tales.
He asked for cinnamon toast for breakfast almost every day one week. This is how he ate it:

One year older and wiser too

Our marriage is one year older. (as are we, but I'll elect not to belabor that point)

Lots of years ago we were married and sealed for time and all eternity in one of the most beautiful buildings on earth. I'm so thankful for those good memories, and for the delightsome ones that have followed. Here's to lots and lots more!

are we really that boring?

SO nearly a month has passed without a blog post from the Whitings.  What are we doing with our lives?? I know you are wondering. The thing is... I'm wondering too.
Time is sliding past us and we're just living through it. I don't know if the stories are thinner on the ground, or I'm getting worse at catching them.
The kids had parent/teacher conferences, and both teachers sang the praises of our brilliant children. (no actual singing, but that could have been cool) I'm proud of those kids of mine. They're pretty great.

It's Fall, and I'm Freezing!

I hope my blood thickens up soon! The weather is cold here, and I am not handling it well. Constant socks and hoodies, and I still find myself wrapped in a blanket and finding excuses not to move. The thermostat is set at 72, but I think it is a conspiracy.

Since last we met, our oldest monkey was recognized at school for being respectful. It is a monthly 'character' /citizenship award, voted by the students. Her teacher called me to invite us to attend, and he said he fully agrees with the classes choice. SO proud of her!
She is doing very well in this new place. She has great friends, and is enjoying school and the 'extended learning' class she get to go to. She is being her usual, enthusiastic, smarty self. I think we'll keep her.

Sea side in Seattle

Sometimes a Mommy needs to run away and figuratively join the circus.
I am a firm believer in the magic of absence making the heart fonder and the mind clearer.
Last week I left my adored monkeys in the capable hands of my dear sister, and I ran away.
I got to tag along while my husband went to Seattle for an Emergency Medicine conference.

I did not attend that conference. I'm not one for lectures about airways and eye injuries.
Instead I high-tailed it to my sister-in-law's house
to see my only nephew and one of my dearest friends, his Momma.

OH- that face!!

Little B and I spent some quality time becoming fast friends.
Not just anyone listens while I read Piggie and Gerald OR calls me 'Win-tee"

Like a Cream Pie to the Face*

Hi world, it is us. We're still here!
Where is here, you ask? Well...
HERE is known as limbo. We are currently house-less and chilling in the land of Utah. (A desert, yes, but it has been seeming so delightfully green and lush to my Arizona eyes) Yay for time to hang out with family and while our summer days away.
Sadly, the padre unit is still in Arizona, working his officially employed magic. Officially Employed! (and there is nothing like jumping into the busiest month and busiest weekend of that month to start a career off right! Am I right?) (Also, there is nothing like a 10 year process to lead up that blessed employment, either. Am I right?)
So I am blogging to fill the gap (because we must mind the gap) between the old Arizona days and the new Arizona days to come.
For your viewing pleasure:

Memory Lane

Strolling down memory lane (in the form of photos saved on my ancient laptop) has been a delightful diversion as of late.
Because there is no news on the new house front. DON'T ASK.
So- lat's take our mind off it together.
Come, take a stroll with me.

What the?!?

It has been more than a month since I last blogged.
I know, you've all been muttering, "What the?!?" to yourselves. A day without a dose of this blog is tragic.
I know.
To ease your tender hearts, I will relay the facts:
We too have been muttering, "What the?!?"

When our house had an offer after 24 hours of being on the market.  What?

When our inherited computer bit the dust (again?) WHAT?

When a friend in our ward here in Tucson offered to watch all three of my kids so The Doctor and I could get away for a few days of house hunting/10 year anniversary commemorating. WHAT?? (she is the happy mom of 6, and she insisted three more would be a treat. a blast was apparently had by all. WHEW!)

When we reached the milestone of married for ten years. What the?!? Ten years?... I'm not old enough for that. I am grateful for every day and excited for an infinity more, though.

When we found two houses that we liked, and thought would work for our family, and there were only $100,000 difference in the two prices. What the?!?

When we started the apparently never ending process of trying to buy a house despite the fact that our current paycheck says we earn like residents, but there is a promise of earning like a doctor. Oh, PAPERWORK! Never ending hoops to jump through and people to wait for. What the?!?!  It has tested my patience. I have wept, and will likely weep again. But recently I have been blessed to feel a calm about the process. I'm certain that the Lord's hand was in the work of getting us to this new place. He won't leave us now. It's an eerie calm when my brain says there should be stress and fear. But I'm going to roll with it.

Someday, we'll have a place to live. I'll blog about it then.

My last WHAT THE?!? was when my ancient lap top refused to read the memory card from my camera. Sorry, only lame phone pics on this blog. I'll figure it out if it kills me!) another post, another day.

My kids keep growing. They are evolving beautifully into these people who are too smart, often funny, terribly opinionated, rowdy, riotous little monkeys.
Grapes got glasses.
Sock is now a reading pro- and fan of BB gun shooting. (thanks to a father/son camp out)
Pencil is a proficient mess maker and randomizer. Case in point:
While walking across the library parking lot he shouted, "Quick, Mom, RUN!"
"Run? Are some cars coming?" I naively asked. (cars? in a parking lot? shows what I know)
"No! Look!" He frantically pointed to another mom and her son, a few spaces back. "HUMANS!"
    So of course, we bolted.

At the park with Grape's dear pal, "J" and Sock's bud, "T"

Schwingin' (all 'S' words have an sh sound now days at our house. It's Shweet.)

she can see!!

In other words...

Hi- welcome to the crazy house.

Watching Dad play Zelda

We're currently pretending that the Doctor is not headed to a Caribbean country in  less than 48 hours. Because He might not be. But he might be. We don't know yet.
I know! Crazy.

So instead of talking about it (because too many swears might leap from my mouth... fingers...)
I present:

Crazy.

As a side note:
Pencil had me in stitches a few nights ago. He decided that his friends all needed to schnuggle him to bed. He tried to carry all of them (I think I counted 9 or 10) into his room. He was squatted down with his arms around as many as possible, trying to stand and then walk, and it was not happening. So he dropped them and said to himself, "I can't handle this."

After I died, I carried his friends to his room so he could tuck them in. (I also grabbed my camera)

no pictures, please!

Wait! Are they all here?! Un-tuck and recount.

 Last kisses, and then goodnight!

MONKEYS in your face

Man, I love these faces.

It is currently a sunny but chilly 37 degrees in our corner of Arizona on this January 14th, 2013.

There is so much beauty in this world and I am thrilled to hear and see and know it, but as you may have noticed these last weeks, Blog writing has not been on my list of activities used to appreciate the world's infinite beauty.

I haven't blogged because there is an elephant in my room. (No, I'm not referring to Pencil and his noise making talents) I'm talking about the fact that the Chief Resident I am married to is a senior... a senior who will be graduating from residency in 6 short months. Graduation. That is one half of my elephant. (The trunk half, maybe?)
It's like when you are in high school. You anticipate this day and you work towards this day and you tell yourself that the accomplishment will be this THING- you know, a moment to live in infamy or a shining beacon of truth and light and hope... probably for the whole world. AND mo matter how long it seems to take, it really comes in the blink of an eye. it catches you unawares and unprepared. And you find that the light at the end of your tunnel is really just the opening to another tunnel.

We've had graduations before, The Doctor and I. Both of us graduated from college. Then he finished Medical School. But this one is the graduation to end all graduations. (at least until Grapes matriculates to higher learning) And this 2013 graduation seems bigger- Realer-- SCARIER than all the others. (Yes, even scarier than my own dear girl graduating from high school.... mostly because I can't think too much about that yet. She's still 8 after all...)

And that is only the front half of my elephant.
This elephant's behind is the whole other part of the story where The Doctor has already signed a contract and has a job. And a starting date and specifics about salary... and he has a medical license. An OFFICIAL state of Arizona medical license like a real doctor and...... WHOA!

My head is at critical mass at this point and I don't know what to think. Because sort-of I can't think. I'm thrilled and overwhelmed. Afraid and elated and weary and humbled and thankful and excited and lost and every other emotion word *here*. (Well, maybe not angry words. There is no anger here. Or paranoia... I don't think. Is there?)

And this elephant follows me around, and I can't talk about him, because I talk too much anyway, and my crazy-brain can't form real words about it anyway and if I talk about it it's like I'm checking out and saying good-bye and I still have six months left! And I decided that I'm going to keep living like normal because there is still so much of our HERE time left, before the THERE time and the new tunnel begin.

So what keeps happening? I talk about it anyway! That mouth of mine.

(it's embarrassing when your mouth has a mind of its own. It's also embarrassing when your blog post turns into a novel of chaos. But let's be real here, you knew it would happen.)

I haven't blogged because that is what is in my head right now. It's kind of a mess.

My intentions are so big for this year of 2013. I want to potty train a monkey and plant some more trees. I want to paint my bathroom and sew a cute new bag (or 20...) I want to read more books and finish at least one of the ones I'm writing. I want to sell my little home and find a brilliant new house for us (or at least one that will work and that I can like a little) AND I hope to experience that grand shift of focus that is bound to come when my light at the end of the tunnel reveals nothing more that a breath of fresh air before another tunnel begins. That shift of focus that helps me see there is a new light to work towards and maybe new joys on the course to come.

You think anyone will want to buy my house with an elephant in it?

The not really so Windy City

Prologue (because this will be a novel, Friends)
Whitney is not adventurous. That should be noted from the start. She would gladly sit at home with a good book any day of the week, and if she were to venture out it would decidedly be to places known and events planned.

The Doctor... not so much.

This trip to Chicago was on the unexpected side for me, and I did not have time to mentally prepare before my mother-in-law was in my house and I was headed to an airport. (BLESS the woman who took beautiful care of my rowdy monkeys while we were away) But away we went! And I rode on an airplane with my sweetheart and remembered a time when we sat on a plane and decided we could get married. I'm so glad we did.

When we landed in Illinois, I asked my husband what our plan for getting to the hotel was.
He asked me if I was up for an adventure. I can't say I loved that answer,
but I shrugged and said I was just along for the ride. (It was a conference trip for his work, after all)
That ride was on the "L" train from O'Hare to Downtown Chicago.

Not intended for children under the age of 3

Just in case you thought my littlest monkey was beginning to grow out of his crazy antics, I submit the evidence from today:

What you see here is a small disc. It is donut shaped, with the hole in an octagonal shape. It came with our Toy-Story play set. (It can be shot out of a small disc launcher) It also makes a fancy ring.

Hail to the Chief

Hail to the Chief, he's the chief and he needs hailing....

The doctor is now known at our house as The Chief. (at least until the newness of his position rubs off a little.) He will be one of the two third-year EM residents who are 'management' in their program. They are basically in charge of liaising between the other specialties, the actual hospital management, etc. and the residents they work with. (as I understand it)

It is recognition of their trust in him. It is evidence of the hard work he does and the good egg that he is. I'm proud of him. Be impressed.

Breakfast Club

Sometimes, when the Doctor works overnight we meet him at the hospital to eat an awesome cafeteria breakfast before he comes home to sleep the day away. This is a chance for us to see him at work, and to share in the fun of eating someone else's cooking.

This Saturday was one such meeting of the Arizona Breakfast Club.
Oh yeah, chocolate milk. And Bacon! That never happens at home.

Bring your kid to work day

So my husband works in the Emergency Room.

I am no stranger to Emergency Rooms... having visited at least four different ones myself, multiple times. (We have a special relationship, the ER and I....) Some might find it to be funny that I married an emergency Physician after the doctor of my childhood joked that I single-handedly paid for the ER in our small town. It's ok, though. I have a thick skin.
I've been a patient enough times to know how it rolls and not be too afraid of the process. I have, however, always dreaded the day when we would have to go see Dad at work. (In my head it was never a matter of 'if' but of 'when')
Turns out that day was today.

Summer Fun

It is summer break here.
It is also getting hotter. I can't in good conscience send kids outside and lock the door until dinner. (Try as I might to convince my conscience otherwise)
So we're trying to stay busy in good ways.
This is the reading nest. They spent more than an hour reading while Pencil napped.
I love that my kids (all 3!) love to read like I do.

Life Is Good

Hello again! It's been simply ages and where HAVE you been, darling? (reading Sherlock Holmes, can you tell?)

I have so many random little stories from the happenings here at our house, I hope I can remember them (and do the stories justice!)

Let me see....

Grapes had another soccer game. It was actually a double header (which, turns out, is a bit merciless in the world of 6-year-old soccer. the poor darlings were truly wiped out before half time of the second game!) Anyway, during the first game, Grapes' team got a goal!! (our first one!) and it was scored by none other than my Sassy Sue. She was elated! And who can blame her? The other team also got one goal. And it was let in by none other than my Mrs. Monkey.
Oh, well. You win some, you loose some.

Their second game was against the national kiddie team of Mexico-- I swear. They were mini-professionals! And their coach was spouting Spanish at them and they were this obedient and organized machine! A machine ready and able to efficiently make the most of our team's tiredness. They basically wiped the field with our tall socks. Sheesh.

Don't worry, the team drowned their sorrows in capri sun and then as a family we headed out to Pizza. (to... celebrate?) My three kids at an essentially empty pizza parlor was a great way to end out outing. We laughed and talked and ate. I enjoyed every minute of it.

The Doctor and I were also able to run away to a date. It was an Alumni Dinner hosted by the Medical College for doctors and spouses here in AZ. We had received an official invitation with a response card. I got curious if this thing would be fancy Schmancy. What would I wear to a fancy Schmancy?! (This is how I measure the fancy-ness of a thing. USPS sent the invite? check! Real card that opens with a fold and printed in color? Check! RSVP requested? Check! Response card with pre-addressed envelope included? Check! Now, the envelope was not pre-stamped.... so we know it was NOT an invite from the Queen..... bit still, people. Fancy.)

So we went, and obviously it was at a fancy schmancy restaurant. But we were a smidgee late because I had to pick The Doctor up at work and wait for him to change into the suit I had brought. (NO scrubs at a nice restaurant, people!) *Side note, I had to pick out the outfits for BOTH of us that night. Talk about clothing anxiety. But we were dressed just right, it turns out. He in an interview suit with blue shirt and striped blue/green/brown tie. I even remembered the brown shoes and belt. (I know, right?!) Me in a brown knee-length dress with white beads around the neck (like a bib necklace) and a white sweater. (I remembered the shoes, but forgot the camera. I know, right?)

And we walked in during the middle of the salad course. The only seats left ended up being between the head of the Alumni Association and the new president and CEO of the Medical School. When they learned The Doctor was a first year resident they looked at us like we were cute babies.

Oh well, the food was good. We got to order from a lovely menu (fillet minion for both of us) and turn down 3 kinds of wine. (Too bad we don't drink) Then there was desssert. (yes, there are three 's's in that word. I remember how to spell that word because you want two desserts, but not two days in the desert. But that night, it was a desire for 3 dessserts that I will remember.) The doctor ordered Triple Chocolate cake. Soooo goood. I ordered Creme Brulee. (do you hear the angelic choir? *Ahhhhh*) I loved it.

My other favorite part of the evening was when partway though my delicious dinner, I realized that I was in a room full of doctors. People who were well established in their careers and comfortably in a totally different income bracket that I have ever been. I overhead snippets... gems, really... like these: "We decided after the second Porshe...." and "...but the maid's quarters were too small, so we kept looking..." It's a different world.

It was a good night. We met lots of really nice people, and learned about the new plans at the Medical College. We even met a young couple who had attended BYU and MCW and are now here for a radiology residency. It was fun to talk to them. I'm so glad we went.

I have one more story to leave with you today. This one is from Sunday.

During the third hour of church, my littlest monkey was feeling rowdy. It's hard for one so small to sit still so long. I knew he was done, so we went to wander the halls and burn some energy. (The Doctor got to sit and listen this time)

So up and down the halls we went. We tested drinking fountains, and peeked into any doors with windows. At one point I paused to say hi to another mom in the halls with her 16-month-old. Pencil took that opportunity to bolt down the hall. I could still see him so I was not worried. Silly me. Three children emerged from the chapel at that time to get drinks. (the other ward was having Sacrament Meeting in the chapel while our ward was in the classrooms for Sunday School) Pencil followed those children to the drinks, and then right back into the rear chapel doors before I could do anything about it! I stuck my head in the door and looked at the backs of a million heads.....but the little monkey could not be found.

Now, you'd think that some spare kid, wandering around a large room full of devout worshipers would stand out. (especially one as cute as this one in his tie!) But the few people I asked said they had not seen him.

Weird, I thought. Maybe he didn't really follow those kids in like it looked like. But, where did he go then? So I began to search the halls, and spare classrooms, and then to question any on-lookers and other mommies. He was really gone. I was near panic at this point. Three other adults began to help me look. We all stuck our heads into the chapel again to look for him. But he was not being found. We split up. I began to wonder if some monster had grabbed him and ran.... oh- NOT a good thought. Then my friend found me and said that she had located my missing baby.

But he was not in her hands, so I was not very relieved.

He was not in her hands because he was ON THE STAND. Yes, he had indeed made it into the chapel. He had casually wandered from the very back to the very front, then climbed the stairs and wandered around near the podium. When Alyssa saw him he was on the left side of the front, playing on the stairs. When I mustered the courage to enter the front chapel door and climb the stairs to the stand he had wandered to the right side and was just locating the bread used for the Sacrament when I grabbed him. The other ward's bishop was looking at me like I was crazy. I was trying not to die of embarrassment.

It's a good thing he's cute.
